Not From Here is excited to announce the launch of the “We Make the City!” series. We seek authors to publish stories on how migrants and ethnic groups created meaning upon arriving to their destinations, how they have historically created these definitions of space and place, and how they eventually came to claim that they are here to stay.
Potential authors can write about a diverse set of themes. They can include, but are not limited to, the histories of food, music, culture, sports, activism and resistance, politics, and identity. The series is not limited to the urban center. We welcome submissions about any city, town, or region regardless of size or population. Articles can be entirely historical in scope or explore contemporary issues.
In the inaugural piece, Martha Guerrero reports on the unionization efforts of migrant “gig” workers in New York City. Guerrero explains the working conditions that led to the organization of Deliveristas Unidos. Interested readers can find the piece here.
