Not From Here is a digital publication dedicated to the history of immigration, race, and ethnicity. It offers a trusted scholarly platform connecting historical research with current events and public discourse. Our mission is to merge historical scholarship with civic engagement, activism, and education. We feature leading voices on immigration, including authors, educators, historians, activists, and graduate students from the U.S. and beyond.

We are seeking submissions that explore the intersections of immigration history and the present. We welcome short essays, interviews, and reflections that connect historical scholarship to pressing contemporary issues such as deportation, immigration policy, birthright citizenshipand anti-immigrant rhetoric. We’re also interested in submissions that help our community navigate these transformative times. Contributors are encouraged to share practical insights into teaching, research, and pedagogy—whether it’s conducting archival research on a tight budget, navigating gatekeeping in archives, teaching in politically charged classrooms or diverse institutional settings, or using digital tools and AI in the study and teaching of immigration and ethnic history.

Finally, Not From Here also welcomes contributions to its Authors on Authors series, which consists of authors interviewing other authors about their recent publications.

New Not From Here series – “Historians at Work”

Not From Here is also launching a new series titled “Historians at Work,” which spotlights historians working beyond traditional academic roles. We welcome short essays, interviews, photo reflections, and commentaries from professionals in museums, archives, journalism, nonprofits, government, and other public-facing sectors. Contributors are encouraged to reflect on their career paths, the relevance of historical training in their current work, and how their roles engage with questions of migration, race, and belonging today.
